I have started on my goals for next year and want to post them here.
Planning:
- Prank on Santa Clause Story - This was on my list last year and i started but it got set aside for more urgent projects. It will be a priority this year. I'm writing it through HTTS.
- Flipper, book 5 - I want to write the rough draft in 2018, to be published in 2020.
WIP - A Millionaire story - (I started this 2-3 years ago and have bits and pieces. I didn't get to it in 2017 and at this point it isn't a priority, but a possibility to finish in 2018.
- Other possibilities for 2018:
* Flipper, book 6
* Anna Flash Fiction - I have an idea for some short stories centered around the dog in the Vetrix series
* Mystery sequel - I have a couple of ideas for a sequel to the mystery but haven't decided to write them or not
Rough draft writing:
1 - Prank on Santa Clause Story - I want to write this through HTTS starting in the summer or early Fall.
2 - Flipper, book 5 - I hope to outline and write this during the summer
- Other possibilities for 2018:
* Flipper, book 6
* Anna Flash Fiction - I have an idea for some short stories centered around the dog in the Vetrix series
* Mystery sequel - I have a couple of ideas for a sequel to the mystery but haven't decided to write them or not
* Millionaire Story. I suspect I won't get to this in 2017 but would like to if possible.
Edit (revise):
1 - When the Time is Right - I'm starting now but will most likely not finish until January/February, 2018.
2 - Zentron (Flipper, book 3) - . I have it written and have started it through HTRYN but paused now that I have a job. I want to finish revising so I can publish it early in 2018) (Will publish summer, 2018)
WIP 3 - A World Amongst - I want to finish this next year early enough to get it to an editor and back. I want it ready to shop in 2019.
Market (Publish):
Flash Fiction Collection - I want to put together a collection of all my flash fiction so I can have a printed book of them. I haven't decided when to make this a priority in my publishing schedule. At this point, it will happen when it happens.
Newspaper Columns - April, 2018 will mark five years of writing my column for the newspaper. They ran my 100th column earlier this year, so I think I'll put together my first 100 columns into a book and publish. I want to have this out in April, for promotional reasons.
Zentron - I hope to publish in August, about the time school starts.
When the Time is Right - I'll decide at a later date what I'm going to do with this, but it will be a possibility of publishing myself at some point. Could be this year or the next. I've decided to shop it around. Sent out the first query letters on 6/3/18.
Study:
HTTS - I started this earlier this year, but will make it a priority in 2018. I have a Christmas story I want to write, which I hope to be the next book I shop to an agent, in 2020.
Mom's Books:
- Fairies. I need to sort through manuscripts, read, then select one and finish.
- Ghosts in a Quarry. I need to sort through manuscripts, read, then select one and finish.
- Other book I've forgotten for now. I need to sort through manuscripts, read, then select one and finish
I am biting off the books as I have time and money. Debbie isn't able to do my covers any more so I will have that added cost on all my books. I would like to have one more published by Yates Center Day in May, but we'll see.
- Sort through Mom's other writings to determine what exists and what can be published and how. I'm sure once I tackle this it will become several goals. May not be until 2019.
Big Picture: I see 2018 as a set-up year. Zentron (book 3 in the series) will be published in August and I'll use the fall to promote in schools as best I can. Then I am set up to release a new book in the series every August-ish. I hope this keeps students engaged as the popularity of the series grows. I hope to be able to give away a copy to each 4-6 graders in Halstead each year. The turnover will create new potential readers each year. I want to be extremely well-known in Halstead and hope I can grow my name outward from here.
I want to get my flash fiction collection printed as well as Mom's three books. I also want to get a book of my columns out and hopefully engage people in the Halstead area. This will also give me serveral books to sell both online and at book signings. And getting those projects complete in 2018 will free me in 2019 t focus on other writing projects.
I also want to have A World Amongst to an editor by the end of the year. I hope then in 2019 I can focus on selling A World Amongst to an agent, and maybe also When The Time Is Right, depending on what I decide to do with that. I'll also have a Christmas story I'll need to revise and hope to target to an agent in 2019-20 ish. And with the other projects out of the way I'll need to learn more about marketing, using my website better, etc. But I need to get these other projects done before I will feel the freedom to proceed.
So, I will be busy in 2018, and don't expect anything "big" to happen, but I hope when I look back I'll see it as the year I was able to set myself up to grow my career in large strides.
