Here's where I'm at so far:
I’m taking out the middle man. I want to create a subscription website. I want some free content. Something the casual viewer will see when wandering by the site. Then break it into:
Package #1 …$1.00 a month.
Package #1 & #2…$5.00
Package #1 & #2 & #3…$10.00
Categories for the different packages. Not sure yet what goes in which package
Carols' Catch-all Corner
A category for a variety of ideas. Such as:
1.Recipes with photos. We are big foodies at our house and we're always experimenting and tweaking. I'd love to share some of the better ones. Or even some of the flops for a touch of humor. We've had some doozies.
2. Various projects that catch my fancy.
Possible Title: From the Workshop. I'm setting up my own workshop space. I've begun to acquire a lot of tools that I must now learn to use. I'm drawn to re-purposing items I find, or pick up cheap, and turning them into functional art. Again, some of this will be helpful and interesting, and some will be humor with a capital 'H'
3. I'm sure I have other items that will fit this catch-all slot. It's sort of filler space. A way to offer more and justify the price of the subscription. Not sure yet what that content will be, or its title.
4. Through the lens or some such title. I'm learning to use the camera for a lot of my artwork. I could share interesting photos, or some of the frustrations I deal with. And solve. I'm learning how to turn artwork into digital form. Its part of my journey in learning how to become an illustrator. This wouldn't be an every month thing. Just a mix-up of different things. Every month would be something different. This is a catch-all corner for variety.
Dahlink and Dumplink
this is the cartoon strip that I'm developing. It's based on my husband and me only in cartoon form. It's mainly seen from the male perspective and my artist muse sits in a corner of my mind and giggles at the crazy life we lead. It feels like a normal life to me, but I've been told by a therapist that we're not...normal, that is. We see the world through cracked (in a good way) lenses.
I need to check out how cartoons, especially syndicated cartoons, are handled. If I need to trademark my characters. This is a new area for me but one that I feel drawn to. It’s part of my move toward illustration art. I want to do this right.
OurHome Studio
From the studio. This could be my work...or Joshua's. It's our expression of thoughts, ideas, and exploration in graphic, visual forms. This is where I think the justification for the price of a subscription lies. It is a free piece of artwork, offered once a month. No two months will ever be the same.
I'm wondering if I should display some of my portrait work. Not for sale but showing it and putting up a price list for commission work. I'm not sure if I should do this or not, but it is a legitimate stream of income. I work fairly fast. and I do work from photographs. The quality of the photo determines how detailed the work can be. I'm torn on this one. Portrait work is a limited market. And it would take hours from me that I could devote to something else, but it is also income. I need to put in place things that will draw money to me. just not sure I want to deal with shipping and handling. It’s something to think about and weigh pros and cons.
Podcast
I need a title for this one. And a focus. I need to have some sort of idea that will tie the different podcasts together.
I've played with the idea of Joshua's journey, as well as our own reaction to the journey, but I'm not sure this would have a large enough audience.
I've thought about creating a persona. My work has been compared to Erma Bombeck's and I could stay in the humorous mode but I'm not sure how long I can maintain this without having some sort of focus.
I thought about taking the Walk with Me blog off the website and rewrite and expand them. (about 20 chapters but I don't think they are long enough for a podcast unless I add commentary to it. Again, not sure about how big an audience it would draw.
I could focus on being a senior who is basically starting a journey that most people start in their twenties. This might appeal to senior citizens who still haven't identified their dreams and passions. One of my goals in everything I do is to encourage people to let go of fear and take the leap. What have they got to lose?
I circle around this podcast and it is something I really want to do. Just not sure what area to look at. I've done a little recording to get used to the sound of my own voice. It’s way outside my comfort zone but I think I can do it if I ever decide on a focus topic.
Articles
I'm thinking this could be part of the free stuff. Not subscription. I have over 30 articles already written that were published in the newspaper. I own the copyright for these and can re-purpose them. Some of them need re-written to suit the venue and others need freshened up but I think I can make most of them work. I can also write new articles. These are what I call, slices of life. Humorous, heart-warming, sometimes silly but all of them easy and fast to read.
Short stories and vignettes
I need a catchy title for this section too.
Not sure if this is a free one, or part of a subscription package.
I can create new, unpublished work for this. Come to think of it. 5 of the short stories I want to write are prequels for a novel I want to write after I get the 3rd Cosmic book out. So, I think I'd want this subscription. when all 5 are written I want to put them out as an anthology which means the subscribers would be getting published work at a much cheaper rate than if they bought it.
I'm also thinking about novellas done as a periodical. This might be part of the free package. I have some story ideas that might fit the novella length. and stretching them out one chapter at a time will give me filler without a lot of effort.
Its also been suggested to me that I re-issue the Cosmic Chronicles. The third book in the trilogy is coming out the end of this year. If I get new covers for them, covers geared toward the Middle Grade readers, and stylized for the current trends, I might be able to energize the series and prepare for the new novel going live.
To do this, I need to figure out how to time it, so I can bring book #1, and book #2, out in a timely manner and generate momentum for the final book of the trilogy.
I’m thinking it might be a good publicity move.
